Much of what is exhibited at the University Museum in Dimond Library at the University of New Hampshire is from my collection. The walls in my library in Jaffrey will be pretty bare until sometime in March.

  • The hallway of Special Collections. The University Museum is through the door on the right. The reading room is at the end of the hall. Science related items are exhibited along the hallway.  January 26, 2018.
  • University Museum. Some Byrd items straight ahead. The open book is a copy of the "Barrier Bull" written and published during the second Byrd Expedition. January 26, 2018.
  • University Museum. Two maps, one from Thomson's Atlas, the other Polus Antarcticus, Hondius, 17th century. In the center is a timeline of Antarctic exploration. January 26, 2018.
  • University Museum. The items on the right refer to the Guernsey cows that were taken to Antarctica on the second Byrd Expedition. A couple of examples of David Abbey Page's pastels, also second Byrd Expedition. On the left is a pastel by Lucia deLeiris, 'Emperor Penguins.' The furs on the left are Byrd's and were lent by Leverett Byrd, a grandson. January 26, 2018.
  • University Museum. The pastel study of penguins on the left is by Elizabeth Saltonstall, a  relative of Byrd's. She posed one penguin twice at Byrd's Boston house where the penguin lived in the bathtub. To the right are the items described earlier. January 26, 2018.
  • University Museum. The ship model on the left is of the 'James Caird, which Shackleton sailed from Elephant Island to South Georgia. The center bronze is of Shackleton, a study for the full size statue recently unveiled in Athy, Ireland. The bust is of Amundsen, sculpted by the Norwegian-American Trygve Hammer. January 26, 2018.
  • University Museum. The Norwegian flag was carried by Amundsen over the North Pole and to the South Pole. Above is a map showing his route to the South Pole. The painting in the center is by Lucia deLeiris and shows the James Caird in heavy seas. On the right is what probably is a publicity view for Shackleton's Endurance expedition. January 26, 2018.
  • University Museum. In the case is a dog harness used on on the Byrd's expeditions.  January 26, 2018.

  • Special Collections Reading Room. An assortment of expedition publications: the South Georgia Gazette, Aurora Australis,  South Polar Times, and the Adelie Blizzard. The watercolor is by Lucia deLeiris and shows the hut at Cape Royds where the Aurora Australis was written, edited, illustrated, printed, bound and printed. January 26, 2018.
